Shalom Namutere Project was established in 2009 as an answer to God’s invitation to participate with him in bringing Shalom (peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare, and tranquility) to eight impoverished villages in Namutere, Samia Bugwe North county, Busia District, Eastern Uganda. Our original work was with children at risk. As a result of the HIV Aids pandemic in the ’90s, the community has a vast number of orphaned children. As our work with children intensified, we were exposed to the realities of various systemic issues impacting the children and the community at large. Our community initiatives seek to holistically meet spiritual, social, and economic needs (Shalom). Below are some specific ways we are involved and continue to respond to this community’s needs.
- Education- Shalom Care School- In 2009, we responded to the numerous children not attending school. Though the government of Uganda provides education for free, the students are supposed to bring scholastic materials and uniforms, which most children couldn’t afford. We provided their scholastic material, uniforms, and shoes. We noticed that though they attended school, learning wasn’t happening. On evaluation, the education was substandard, and many, after many years, couldn’t understand anything. We started providing coaching on the weekends in vain. In 2017, we started a school to demonstrate learning and provide quality education to at least the needy and children at risk in this community.
- Healthcare – Shalom Community Health Center- In 2012, we observed a considerable lack of health care surrounding the children we served. It took 8-10 km to access a health center. We established a dispensary and have been involved in vaccinations, tests, public health campaigns, outreach programs, and free medical camps. We embarked on constructing a Community Medical Health Center. We seek to improve the utilization and accessibility of primary health care services, provide laboratory services, and improve maternal mortality rates by providing quality pre- and post-natal services.
- Community Interventions
-
- Youth empowerment– We empower the youth by training them with skills and developing their capacity to be part of developing their community.
- Women and widow care– over the years, we have been working to support women, especially widows, in economic development. In small groups, they do business projects that are supposed to be a source of income to support their families. We also provide skills development for the women, hoping they can participate in the change they long to experience (Read more about the Widows program).
- Leadership development; Aware of systemic and social factors that significantly affect this community, we are aware of the internal and external
- Advocacy– We also advocate for the community in areas we believe require justice. We have been able to get a clean borehole for the community, ensuring that children are not walking too far to get safe, clean water. We have also had electricity after lengthy deliberations with the government. See more on some areas where we have participated and advocated for the community. See Here.
